Gaberdine’s self-titled EP has got to be one of the best releases from a band with a cello player to come out in a long time – and how often does one get to say that? The brainchild of singer/songwriter mark Federighi, the band’s sparing use of guitars (both electric and acoustic) and masterful mallet and brush use on the skins gives Gaberdine’s music a very darkly melancholy feel to it. Bethany Swain’s dramatic cello work and Federighi’s haunting vocals only serve to add to the overall ambiance of the EP.
